Every year, marketing authorisation holders abandon products that patients depend on. The reasons are commercial — the product is too small, the market too fragmented, the regulatory burden too high relative to revenue. The consequences are medical — patients lose access to medicines they need.

New EU legislation aims to address this through reporting obligations and shortage prevention mechanisms. But legislation creates obligations — it doesn’t create companies willing to take on the products themselves.
